Are You a Multi-Tasking Monster? Practice Mindfulness and Slay the Monster

Multi-task - Chrome Browser
I am a multi-tasking monster!

I’m not bragging neither being proud of being a multi-task monster. It’s a horrible feat that I possess. Even when I’m writing this post, I have the urge to do other “unfinished” tasks. I’m thinking on writing my assignment essay paper, preparing slides for my class presentation, writing email, writing a blog post for my other blog, to read blog posts and watch videos that I have abandoned, and check my Facebook account.

Procrastination and multi-tasking is a mechanism that kicks-in while you’re unaware of it until it’s too late, especially when you’re not focused enough. – Elisha Batuncang

Doing too many things at a time doesn’t do any good, you will loose focus, kill your creativity, get yourself overwhelmed with tasks because your brain too will soon run out of memory and this will sap your energy. Productivity = negative.

Currently…

I have 3 of my web browsers on and each of them have extraordinary amount of tabs open.

34 Chrome tabs open
27 Firefox tabs open
15 Opera tabs open

4 Words documents are open. 2 of them are my essay assignment and the other 2 are the instructions. I have wrote a bit and abandon it to write a blog post, not this post, which I get myself loss in Wikipedia and strayed to watch videos in youtube.

And believe me, I just got myself strayed… Again…

Multi-tasking has really wasted my energy and my precious time. My attention span and concentration is thinning down. Before I could finish one of my task I start another new task.

My Mission

Today is the first day of the month, often to be the best day to implement something – a task, goal, etc., and for my case, I need to change my habit and start practice mindfulness.

Mindful means one thing at a time.
If you want to get more things done, be mindful.
If you want to have more time, be mindful.

I’m getting excited now and this would be a very challenging month for me. All these while I’m so used to be doing a lot of things in a time, switching from task to task.

To train and reprogram myself to do one thing at a time would be challenging but it is a rewarding habit for me to acquire. It will sharpen my focus and improve my attention span.

If you have any tips to share with me on being mindful, please don’t hesitate to share with me. I really appreciate your help and advice.

Reflecting back on 2009

I personally would like to wish you all a Happy New Year 2010. May happiness, health, prosperity and the best keeps on coming throughout the new year. Cheers and God Bless You.

Our life is like a stream of water that flows constantly. Life keeps on moving forward but don't forget to reflect back both your sweet and bitter moments, memories, and accomplishments. As we reflect back on what we have accomplished, we can learn from them and these allows us to grow.

Here are some of the best moments and memories happened in my life in year 2009.

University Life

1.

After studying Engineering for 7 years I have decided to put it to an end. It was the best decision I ever did. I don't want to waste my time studying something that I never like. Honestly, it was so depressing. Even my aptitude test result shows that my "career personality" is never close of being an Engineer.

So I switched to business studies. Now my university life is much more interesting and everything is going great.

2.

Acted as a prince in my management class group presentation. And we called ourselves the SwinEagles.
Acted in Swinburne for the first time.

3.

Job well done. Having steamboat dinner with the SwinEagles.

4.

Went for my first prom.

Sports

5.

My first time to:
Joined a cycling convoy. Took part in a cycling event for charity. Go mountain biking at Mount Mike, Kuching.

6.

My first involvement in Irau Aco Lun Bawang activities. Representing the Lun Bawang Kuching football team and we got 2nd place.

7.

Represent Swinburne in the UniMed Futsal Tournament. We got 3rd place.
My first time to represent Swinburne in any sporting competition.

8.

Represent the Business School in Swinburne Sports Carnival. We are the champion.
My first time to play in the Swinburne Sports Carnival.

9.

Became a club president for the first time - Swinburne Sarawak Football Club.
Organized an event for the first time - Swinburne Futsal Tournament.
Organized the first competitive event for the football club itself.
My team, the Wild Devils, got trashed in the group stage. Although the losing was a bit painful to accept but I was glad that the tournament went on successfully.

10.

Joined the Red Bull 7 competition and unfortunately we got eliminated in the group stage.
My first time to join a futsal open tournament.

Other Accomplishments and Great Moments

11.

Went to Stadium Negeri and watch the Sarawak FC trashing ATM FC. Happens also to be my first taste of local professional football.

12.

Bought my first laptop. Mobility is my priority. I have decided to switch from desktop to laptop and bought this gaming machine - the Acer Aspire 6935G

13.

Participated the Earth Hour Campaign and voted Earth by switching off the lights.

14.

Adopted Mickey and Minnie. Decided to breed them and they are blessed with 10 litters.

15.

Adopted Pogo and Daisy. I made the cage by myself.

16.

Performing in the bamboo band for the first time. To be honest, majority of the Lun Bawang and also the Kelabit youngsters nowadays never played any of the traditional musical instruments or involve in traditional activities.

A very sad truth indeed that I was once felled into that category but now I could reclaim my pride back.

17.

Went for a beach party with my course mates.

You might have noted this. Most of the thing I share here with you was something that I did for the first time. The experiences that I have gained through these are priceless. Everyone has their own dreams and things that they want to accomplish but we are too busy. Or maybe you think that the challenge is too hard for you to bear.

If you just cling yourself in the comfort zone, you won't accomplish anything. Opportunity always knocks on the door, but it is your job to identify it.

On top of this, I'm very grateful to God for He has blessed me throughout the year. It has been a great year for me. Also I would like to thank my family and friends whom had supported me through the ups and downs of my life.

Something for you to think of...

No matter what you have done for yourself... If you don't even have the time to reflect back what you have done, you might forget and lost it. So what have you really accomplished?

Be proud of your accomplishment even though it is small.

Eli is 24: Looking back and Planning Ahead

Birthdays is an anniversary that signifies that God had blessed and being with us since we're born till today, and now I'm already 24 years old.

Years before, what I normaly do on my birthday was just celebrate and party. I never even bothered to look back and reflect on my past nor planning ahead. After years I realized it was unwise not to reflect what I've did in my past and plan ahead.

Looking back now...
For over the past 12 months, I have learn a lot of life lessons and experiences which are both bitter and sweet. These life lessons and experiences has indeed significantly changed me from someone who I was than the years before.

I can consider it as a critical phase of change in my life.

I could say it was the bitter experiences that has gave me the wake-up call. It wasn't anything easy to swallow but amzingly it has thought me loads of valuable life lessons.

Just few days after my 23rd birthday I was shadowed by depression which was caused by my failed relationship. I hit rockbottom and it was really hard. Guilt, sadness, anger and despair haunts me day and night.

As the day goes by, again "time" has proved itself as a good healer. Wake up, it's time to rise and get back up on my feet again. I realized that I would get worse off if I am not going to change because the world is a constant change and life is going on.

So I began a quest to search for the "cure" of this misery. What I needed next is a road map which can guide me along this journey. No doubt it is the bible that has guided me and my favourite readings are from the book of Proverbs. These ancient poetry thought me wisdom and discipline, and also gave me knowledge and purpose. I would recommend you to read the book of Proverbs weekly or even better daily, and I promise you it will benefit you a lot.

I've also went for a self-improvement seminar. It's a seminar about the development of self which requires me to EXPLORE, DISCOVER, that govern my thoughts, feelings and action, and lastly to CHANGE.

Another amazing thing happened, I've started to stuff my book cabinet with self-improvement books. It wasn't any big collection like what you see in the library because I spent most of my time reading online materials such as blog which are easy to find, locate and of course free. There are millions of self-improvement blogs out there in the space of blogosphere but these are my favourites and recommended reads:
1. Zen Habits
2. HELLO, my name is BLOG
3. LifeDev
4. Michael Hyatt
5. The New Man of Action
6. Motivate Thyself
7. Goodlife Zen
8. Eli Shares

Through these I have learned to look deeper into myself and discovered many faults. Not only in relationship alone but also in other factors such as habit and attitude.

"The GREATEST discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind!" - William James

It's a moment of decision to re-shape myself. Every mistake or problem that I did in the past won't part, but what I can do is to learn from it and find a way to repair and improve. To behave in the same old way over and over, and expecting different result is just crazy.

Self-improvement ain't a 1 day or 1 year journey though, so don't expect things to change just in a click of fingers. You can't conquer Rome in just one day!! Self-improvement is like re-programming yourself through repeated action just like how a footballer practice and harness their scoring and passing skill.

"If you do not by force program yourself positively, by neglect you get programmed negatively." - Napolean Hill

Looking forward and planning ahead...
I could say that I'm lucky to be born around the middle of the year. Why? Compared to those born early and end of the year, I have the opportunity to checkup my yearly goals that I've setted up, in the same time improvise them.

Though you can do the same thing as me, checking up your yearly goals in the middle of the year but for my case, I consider it as special. Just like when you set goal on new year's eve - you're charged up with motivation.

So far, honestly I've just successfuly accomplished one goal only - watching Sarawak FC in action. Last couple of weeks, the result of my 1st semester final exam has been published out and thank God I passed all the papers. Another semester to go and I'm looking forward to pass all the papers and get a better result.

How about the other goals?
Thinking back earlier this year I was on streak of hype full with passion and motivation. I was more organized and focused back then. But as the days goes by, month after month, the fire of passions slowly burned out.

I'm back to square one again. The fact is, it's not hard to get started with all of the goals which I have setted. It's maintaining what I have started is the where I failed. Staying motivated is indeed quite a challenge.

What is my next plan?
As you can see,  everything falls into a circle. Staying in the same circle won't help me to move further on. Just like doing the same thing but expecting different result. Isn't that just insane?

Right now, I need to climb up from the bottom again and get back on track on what I have started. I loose track with my goals because they're out of sight which equals out of mind. I should write them down, not only in my blog post but put them and paper and stick it on the wall. Just like a constant reminder, it will help me to stay focused and motivated.

Staying motivated takes practice, but it is a skill that everyone can learn. Although I could just see some small changes in my life at first, but this is an incentive for me to tackle more and more goals, and the more changes I would see in my life.

If I can change my life, you definately can change yours too. No matter what situation you're having right now, you have the power of choice to change.

The future is in you own hand.

I have been attending quite numbers of talks/seminar this year and last two week I went for a seminar about self-development. It was a seminar organized by my dad's insurance company, AXA Affin Life Insurance.

The speaker was Pauline and it wasn't any ordinary seminar where you just sit there, listen and jotting down key points and ideas. Participants are encouraged to actively participate in all the sessions.

As we started, the first question she asked us is "What is your principle, value and belief in life?"

Treating self-improvement as my top priority.

No doubt that I, and most of us, has this principle planted inside us since we were young. We want to be better than others by comparing ourselves to our peers, friends, relatives and parents - especially being better then who we are yesterday.

Those who holds this principle will constantly look for ways on how to improve themselves in all of the major aspects in their life. This really has played a big role in shaping me to be the person who I am now.

A bit history about me
I still remember when I was a kid, I love to play basketball and I dream to be one of the best basketball player. Everything started when I was in primary 4 (10 years old), from a brat who fights everyday to a boy who plays basketball everyday.

I was so heavily influenced by the comics I've read especially Dragon Ball Z (my fighting era) and Slam Dunk (my basketball era). During that time, most of my peers has started actively involve in basketball and I don't want to be left behind.

Without any basic skills and previous background in basketball I have to start from scratch!! I have to do all the basic trainings while watching my friends doing more advanced training from the sideline. It really itches me!!

Being left behind, I trained myself to the max everyday without fail. With the burning desire and passion within me, I improved my basic skills rapidly. To think about it, I was just like the main character of the Slam Dunk comic - Sakuragi Hanamichi.

After two months of basic training the coach called me into the team, where I joined my friends, was the most joyous and exciting moment but I know the challenge has just started. I have to fight for the top spot in the team - means i have to train even harder.

So I trained myself daily to improve my shootings and to be better than myself of yesterday. Everyday at 2 afternoon, I'll walk down to school for my rigorous self-training under the scourging sun before I join up with my group mates around 5 because I want to be the best.

(Me - #10)

The hard works paid off, my team won the school championship, which is my first ever medal and cup on my first taste of sport competition, and I was selected to represent the district and division (which was later rejected by the school headmaster and my parents because of UPSR exam).

(Me - Yellow #10)

Although after primary school, it is the end of my basketball era, but I still actively participate in some local competitions. Forgive me for bragging, I believe that I'm still the best ever Lun Bawang basketball player (#1)!!

10 Tips on Positive Financial Habits

Last week I went to a financial intelligence talk at the Performing Arts Theatre. I was invited by Mr. Robert Chiong, my dad's friend, a mutual fund agent. The talk was supposed to be held last month but it was cancelled due to the flood so the talk was postponed.

The speaker of the talk is Mr. Karthigesu, a former Bank Negara auditor, and now he's doing e-marketing business and coaching. He's also the Indian version of Robert Kiyosaki -  Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

Here's a list of 10 positive financial habits to take control of your personal finance:

1. Write down expenses. Get hold of your cash flow and most importantly your expenses. Record them daily either by recording them into a book or into a software such as Microsoft Money. Keep track on your spending, set your monthly budget and eliminate those necessaries.

I'm using Microsoft Money 2006 - yea, I know mine's outdated but it's the only software I had in my PC and it's FREE! - Pirated version of course.

Did you ever write down and record your cash flow? If you never done this before, start now and be an accountant of yourself.

2. Pay yourself first. This one of the most powerful strategy on building wealth. Aside from all your monthly budget on foods, groceries and bills, take 10% of your gross income and put them into the bank or invest them in mutual fund or stocks. You can also hide them under your bed.

Way back during my diploma studies in Miri, I live alone, every month my parents bank in money into my account and I have a habit of keeping 10% of the money into a box - I call it home bank. These money I save in the home bank are used for my wants (ie. Movie DVDs, audio CDs, PC games, movie tickets etc.) and also for emergency needs - you won't know when you need them.

Did you pay yourself yet?

3. Avoid credit card purchase. Unless you are willing to pay the balance on time or you will just build a prison of debt. Credit card is really convenience - no cash? No problem. You just need to do some acrobatic action moves... *swipes swipes*... and land a signature move on the paper. Well done, now you can bring your medal back home.

Most people realize its high annual interest rate but what they don't realize is that they spend more than what they earn - purchasing goods because they come begging. If you have a habit of impulsive "swipes" purchase, you may consider to freeze your cards into ice.

4. Wait for two weeks for MAJOR purchases. Currently I'm not using my desktop computer to do stuff, I'm using my mum's laptop. My desktop has gone hair-wired and I really (need) to have a new personal computer, either a desktop or a laptop, but of course I would prefer to have a desktop. But my dad told me to decides carefully (in one week) whether I really (want) a desktop or a laptop.

Why I want a desktop - graphic and gaming, bigger storage, bigger screen, cheaper, robust and it is easy to replace and upgrade the hardware.

Why I want a laptop - mobility, less cables and cords and less usage of space on my study desk.

Finally, I came out with a decision - laptop, because mobility is my highest priority. So I browsed the laptop flyers I took, looking for laptop that performs almost as powerful as a desktop PC and I found one that really fancy me - ACER Aspire 6935G.

After deciding my dad told me to wait for another two weeks for the major purchase. The reason behind this is:
1. If my desire is emotional, I would realize that I don't really need it.
2. Give time - to plan, save up and budget.
3. Price might probably drop

So if you are about to make a major purchase, wait... Set a waiting period before you buy to determine whether it's a needs or wants. This will definitely help you to save your money.

5. Read money related article. Read at least one article everyday to improve your financial intelligence because it will help you to be more responsible and manage your money effectively thus taking control of your finances.

To be financially literate, you need to have knowledge about money. You might consider buying magazines or  google on "financial and money related articles". Get Rich Slowly is my favourite personal finance blog.

6. Shop with a list. The most important thing to do before going out shopping is to make a list on what to buy and make sure you stick to it. This will help you to keep your grocery bill down.

Most of the time when we go out shopping we tend to buy stuff that we don't really need at the moment. With just only 3 items in mind before we step into the stores, we ended up with a packed full trolley at the counter.

Supermarkets are professionally designed to make you, the shopper, shop till you drop. Avoid making eye contact with those eye-catching sexy items that want you to put them in your trolley. They're professionally groomed to catch your eyes so that you fall into their trap.

Be a smart shopper and shop with a list.

7. Have a piggy bank. Make this your habit, put all your loose changes in a piggy bank or coin jar or coin box or whatever you name it. As I grew up I still practice this favourite old-fashioned saving method.

When I was a kid, I still remember that I have three "tiger" banks designated for savings and spending. One is for my bank savings and another two is for toys, comics, foods and other stuff.

As I grew up and become a teenager I only have a coin box for the loose change. But this time I keep track with its flow, how much did I put in and how much did I've spent, and recorded them in a small book. After years of devoted practice, I came up with the home banking idea - a better and well managed piggy bank system.

The idea of having a piggy bank is to promote saving habit - the basic of financial skill. Save your loose changes and put them into the piggy bank and watch the money rolls.

8. Eat in, not out. Dining out has became a very popular trend in our amazingly busy culture nowadays. We knew that dining outside are very costly but we're either just simply too busy or have no time or just lazy to cook.

Whatever your excuses are, dine out less and try to learn eating at home or bring lunch to work/school. Burn the stove or burn a hole in your pocket.

9. Avoid convenience or speciality stores. Avoid frequent visits to convenience stores such as 7-Eleven because most of their goods costs more expensive than those in the supermarket. This is because they are operating 24 hours a day.

Also avoid frequent visits to specialty stores such as those trendy coffee outlets like Coffee Bean and Starbucks which would be very costly for students like me. Instead try to hang out at local coffee shops or just make your own coffee at home and enjoy it.

10. Don't outsource. Save your money and do what you can do such as washing your car, maw the lawn and do your own laundry. These activities will also benefits you with good light exercises and workouts.

Since most weekends I'll be free in the evening. During these free time I'll spend some wet moments with my car. Although it might be a bit tiring but I found it rewarding because I can save up RM 9 for a car wash every week. Guess how much I can save up? RM 36 for a month and RM 432 a year!!

Instead of paying the carwash operator RM 9 why not wash the car yourself? Save up the money and put them into your piggy bank.

*Another additional tip from me
Quit Smoking. Everyone knows that smoking is a very bad habit and knows its ill-impact in our life. Imagine how much have you spent on those damn cigarettes, what if you save those amount of money in you bank, maybe now you may can even go travelling or maybe buy a bike with CASH!!

Stop damaging your health and your wealth. No buts, just quit smoking.

Welcoming The Year Of Ox

First of all I would like to wish all my Chinese friends and readers
HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!

Photo courtesy of Birds As Art.

This year is the year of ox, the second animal of the Chinese Zodiac, and I was born under this strong characted zodiac sign. Ox symbolize prosperity through fortitude and hard work. Wonderful isn't it to be born under a zodiac sign that has powerful signs of being a born leader, dependable and possessing innate ability to achieve great things. The cool fact is that these world famous leaders such as Barak Obama, Priness Diana, Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussien and Napoleon Bonaparte are also born in the year of ox!! My favourite footballer, Wayne Rooney, is also born in the year of ox!! You definitely see the spirit of ox in him while he's playing.

Most of us now might be busy visiting Chinese Horoscope sites, seeking information and to learn more about your omens for the year. To be honest I really enjoy reading horoscope, either the Western or Eastern, mainly because some way it motivates me in the positive way, but I won't govern my life based on my sign.

In Kuching, for days our nights were brighten up with colourful and beautiful fireworks, they can't even wait till midnight bombarding the sky 15 minutes earlier before new year. Which is rare back in my hometown, where you can only see fireworks shooting into the sky only on the new year. While in Gaza, they have advance "fireworks" that will explode in the sky and produce more tiny "fireworks" which will after that produce massive "fireworks" as it touches the ground - BIG BANG!!

I like festive seasons, it's time to get around visiting friends, enjoy the view of fireworks and of course feed your stomach all you can. Okay, I've done that on Christmas but this Chinese New Year I fed myself with advices and motivations.

Since my parents move to Kuching, I've been following them visiting their friends. One of my dad's senior is an avid talker on education. I've visited him last year and he and my dad had adviced me to continue on with my engineering studies. Their advice does motivates me a bit in the first semester of the year but in the end, on the second semester, I just can't force myself - I'm remarkably stubborn.

I can see the ox spirit within me, very persistent, for five years I've continued requesting my parents that I wanna change program to business. It does pays off, my parents agrees and this coming semester I'll be studying business, in the year of ox - how coincidence. I explained it to my dad's friend, he paused and agree with my opinion. He smiles and say "This is the time for you to realize your dream, God has granted your wish and now it's your turn to do your part".

Nick Vujicic - A Man Without Limbs And A Man Without Limits

Imagine that you're born without arms and legs. What can you do when you're physically disabled? You couldn't do what normal people can do like walking, running, dancing, sports, hold hands, hugging with your arm wrapping around someone and you have no hands to experience touch!! Imagine how will these inabilities effects your daily life.

Photo courtesy of Attitude is Altitude.

But being born without arms and legs doesn't limit Nick Vujicic from achieving his goals and dreams. Born with such massive disability you won't expect someone like him "walking" and travelling around the world touching peoples heart with his inspirations and motivations. This guy really inspires me, a perfect example of life without limits.

These are the keys that helps him and changed his life from a man without limbs to a man without limits.
- Perspective, vision and choice.

Nick grew up and learned to deal and adapt with his situation and started to find ways to accomplish tasks and do a lot of things on his own. If Nick can touch the lives of millions and overcomes all the hardships in his life and take charge, what's our excuses? Why can't we do it? Trash all the excuses and overcome the mindset of limiting ourself that we can't do something.

Goodbye 2008 and Welcome 2009

Now it's the time to start planting the seeds. But the seeds will only grow and flourish if you have taken good care of it. Taking good care of it means you water it, weed it, provides it with good fertilizer and also good light source.

Same goes to the new year's resolution goals. Goals will just be mere wishful goals if you don't put them into writings and then formulates a plan and put them into action. In order to resolve your resolutions you have to do proper planning on what to do next and what are the steps required to fulfill your goals.

Failing to do so, you'll ended up having the same and repeating new year resolutions every year - which is called the "bring forward" goals. As the famous saying says, "By failing to prepare, you're preparing to fail", I don't want to do the same mistake again.

Everyone wants to grow, achieving something in their life and climb the ladder of success. But things won't come easy so don't expect everything will come into your life knocking on your door. When you dream of something it will only become a reality if you do your part - realizing it.

So what are my goals for this year?

Live healthy. It's easy to say live healthy but the reality to live healthy is that I have to do a lot of enjoyable hard works. Enjoyable? Yes, exercises can be a lot of fun, like playing football and futsal, I really enjoy them a lot. I have also already started hitting the gym early this year, pump some weights and runs on the treadmill like a hamster. I wanna have a nice muscle cut and stay fit. I'll also switch junk foods to fruits as my snack and cutting down my intake of alcohol.

Get to done. Eliminate procrastination and get things done. Tasks comes one after another, so it is crucial to identify which task are urgent and which are important, which task to do first and which to do later. Finish every task that has started first then proceeds to the next task. Keep multi-tasking at minimal as possible.

Simplifying. I want to get rid with all the clutters in my rooms and also in my head. I have a bad habit of leaving the cup, glass, bottle and cans on the table, especially on my computer desk. I only attend to these "left overs" when my mom starts to yap at me. I need to eliminate this bad habit as soon as possible. Clutters in my head aren't actually a problem, these clutters is which I call the "web of ideas". Rather than leaving them playing around in my head, which I'll tend to forget soon, I should put them on paper where I can remember them. So it's all about clearing - mess, desk, email inbox and phone inbox.

Pass all my papers. This coming semester I'll be studying a new course, Business (Management and International Business). I've withdrawed from engineering course because I want to pursue my dream which is to become a businessman. I've been studying engineering for 7 years (since I was 16) so getting into business course is something very new to me. But anyway I feel so excited, can't wait for the class to start!!

Take control of my personal finance. I realized that it's very important to track all the spendings and incomes that rolls in my wallet. This is the best way to realize that how the money comes and goes in your life. All these while I've been spending my money without realizing what I've spent on. Tracking my spending will also help me to develop a new skill in data collection which might be a big help for my business studies.

Watching Sarawak FC live. Being a Sarawakian, till today I never watch any of the local football team's match live in the stadium. Only watch them playing in the TV while I was still a kid!! I know, they aren't as big as the European league clubs, but if you really love football you have to support your own local football club.

Begin a journal. Aside from sharing in my blog, I should begin a journal where I can express my deepest emotions and inner thoughts within me by responding and reflecting to the experiences and events happening in my life. A place where I can explore not only my thoughts and emotions but also my experiences.

But there is one simple thing that I should remind you, remain flexible. Unexpected obstacles may come through our voyage, so expect changes on your plan or maybe even your goal. Don't limit yourself and let opportunity pass because of your inflexibility. Remain flexible, focus on your goal until you reach your destination.

Now go ahead and pursue your dream and achieve goals but most importantly enjoy the journey!!

"Do lak mebaruh!!"

I really appreciate and grateful with the happy moments and the experiences with my wonderful family and friends.

Was 2008 a good year for you?

It Pays to Get Up Early in the Morning

Surprise surprise... I woke up surprisingly early today around 5 in the morning!!! I went to bed quite late last night, just 3 hours back before I greet the day. Amazingly I feel great and normal like a fully charged battery. Was wondering what has interrupted my sleep but I can't find a clue.

Today is the first week of my holiday and I'm awake so early in the morning. I never woke up early like this during the semester even though I have early morning class.

Still lying on the bed with my eyes tightly closed, I forced myself to get back into sleep but my attempt failed. So I decided to stop wasting my energy on forcing myself back to sleep and start the day.

Waking up early today...

I found quietude. Everything is so peaceful and so quiet. In the early morning like this there's no cars, no bikes, no yells, no musics, no TVs noise. I truly enjoy this time of peace, it's the time for me to plan ahead on my goal today.

I see sunrise. I can't recall back when's the last time I saw sunrise. I'm a night-owl so it's rare for me to experience this greatest feat of nature - the transition of day. Where you can see the dark blue sky lighten up by the glorious morning star and slowly turns the sky light blue like a lamp dimmer. I can't imagine how if earth is square shaped, we might experience the day and night like the the on/off lamp switch at home.

Breakfast together with my parents. Having the most important meals of the day a little chit chat with my parents did boost up my day - mentally and physically. Cracking some jokes in the morning is a good way to jump start the day and lighten up your day with a good mood.

Goal time. After enjoying the quietude, the sunrise and filled my body with breakfast, now it's the time for me to review my plan of "my goal of the day" and execute it. To be a productive person, it's very important to have at least a goal to accomplish for a day. My goal today is to clean up my room.

Waking up early today really benefits me a lot - it's a godsend.

Eli Celebrates His One Year Smoke Free

Today, I would like to celebrate my 1st non-smoking anniversary. I've reached 1 year milestone!!! I didn't really know when was the exact date of my quit so I've decided to mark my first year of gratitude on the 3rd December although I've announced TAK NAK! around November last year. Today I'll treat myself and my family a nice dinner to celebrate my accomplishment.

Quitting smoking is easy. You just need to reprogram yourself.

Smoking is a habit, so the only way to break this habit is through hypnosis and meditation. It has proven to be the most successful method to quit smoking cold turkey. I didn't use any smoking cessation aids such as the nicotine gum, inhaler and patches in the process. I just quit smoking abruptly.

It's like a miracle, since after my self hypnosis session I never crave and have an urge for a bloody stick of fag. I reprogrammed myself and created a new identity to be a non-smoker, someone who never smoke before, effortlessly. It has cut off all the smoking habitual cues such as: in the morning, in the car, toilet, after meal, alcohol, chatting with friends, etc.

No substitution of habit is required because I've reprogrammed my subconscious mind and it will actively support me being a non-smoker. That's the reason why I can quit smoking effortlessly. The withdrawal symptoms were also greatly reduced through hypnosis method. This helps me to relax and reduce stress.

I still hang around with my friends who are smoking like dragon without worrying that it will trigger a cue for me to smoke back. I remained smoke-free around the others who're still smoking.

My experiment on smoking
But one thing I need to admit is that I did tried smoking once. It's just an experiment on myself just to see how my body reacts after a few puffs because it really intrigues me. This experiment is just on half stick of fag. So the aftermath of the experiment:
1. My body system turns upside down and I got sick.
2. It suffocates me.
3. I got sore throat for almost a month.
4. Cough for a month.
5. I almost puke, the saliva floods my mouth.
6. Catch a flu.

The conclusion of the experiment is NO SMOKING

I would like to thank those who've supported me and I really appreciate it and also a big thanks to myself for making quitting smoking a reality. Now I'm living a smoke-free life.

My Blogging Mistake

Feedbacks and comments are very important because I would like to know what you think and share your opinions on what I've shared. It forced me to think why the numbers of feedbacks and comments are very low? What is the problem and why?

Looking at my posts, I found out something what I regret most...
I didn't blog enough.

Eli Shares was created way back on 11th January 2007. Almost 2 years blogging I only manage to write a total of only 27 blog posts. I was having problem with my posting frequency and failed to maintain my momentum. It causes a huge gap between posts with the longest gap of approximately 5 months and to be exact 135 days!!!

I have to blame it on my bad habits. I tend to procrastinate a lot. When I have idea on what to post but a lot of "things came up" so what I did was telling myself that I'll write about it later or the next day but then I'll find myself skipping it again for the next day and continues on.

The major cause of my bad frequency of posting is the blogger's block. Having trouble on what to blog about and I don't know how to begin and start writing - not even writing a draft. Staring blankly in front of the post editor and hoping that I'll think of a topic to write but ended up not writing anything. I was out of idea, lack of inspiration, creativity and motivation.

As a blogger this concerns me because readers will return disappointed because I didn't update my blog with fresh post. This may cause the readers to abandon reading my blog.

Learning from my mistakes, I'll find out ways to improve my blog and correct the mistakes which I have made.

I need to overcome these obstacles by overcoming procrastination and battling blogger's block.

Always Double Check Your Works

I'm so happy after I've completed with my programming project wich is due today.  What a relief, after all the hardworks squeezing my brain out to write a program of a Point of Sale system, now I can start concentrating on the final papers next week and on the following week.

Actually the program has completed last Wednesday but I didn't double checked whether the whole program runs without any problem. After done writing the program I just proof checked a few of the functions and assume that the other functions are working as those I've checked.

I WAS COMPLETELY WRONG!!

Actually I was about to submit the program to the lecturer until that I discovered a glitch that one of the function is not working.  So I have to debug the program and try to look for the error and it's a lot of work!! It really stressed me out and give me a big headache because I have to check the codes line by line and functions by functions and compare it to the header file of another program within to locate and correct the error.

Debugging the program patiently and at last I found the bloody culprit.
"saveProduct(data, items)" <- WRONG!!!
This is how it supposed to be -> "saveProduct(items, data)"

Just misplaced these two entities, "items" and "data", has made the whole system gone out of order. I bet I was lucky to double check it just before I send it to the lecturer. This may have saved few marks for my project and I hope that I'll get a good result.

My parents, high school teachers, university lecturer always harps on this issue over and over:
Never leave everything to the last minute so that you won't lose the chance to revisit and double check your work. I know, I rarely listened to them, but I know why the keep stressing this out.

So folks, the moral of the story is
Always Double Check Your Works!!

How to Stay Focus

Final exam is around the corner and my first paper is on next week Friday. I still have an assignment due this Friday and still doing it. Was supposed to finish it earlier so I can start doing my studies for my papers. The problem is that it's hard for me to stay focus on what I'm doing. I'm so easily get distracted and I always multi-task and procrastinate!! Switching from a task to another task and spend most of my time doing things that seems important but actually aren't.

As a student, I have this feeling buried deep down inside me. It's a pain to the soul, feeling guilty for not studying. It feels like something eating me from the inside and I feel like to explode. Stressed, disoriented, unmotivated, crazy, blank, blur, idle, hyper, inactive, whatever..... bla bla bla

Enough with these NONSENSE!!!

I need to eliminate these thoughts and re-organize my mind and seek optimum mental focusing as focusing is the key to all success.

8 steps to obtain optimum mental focusing...

1st... I need to eliminate all distractions.

  • Plan what need to be done for the day as this will free my mind from worrying about it.
  • Clear my desk.
  • Strictly no Facebooking, MSN chatting and web surfing.
  • Put the phone into silent mode.
2nd... Take my breakfast because it's the most important meal of the day. It will fuel me up and make me feel better and energized, this will help me to perform better. Remember eating healthy breakfast is the best way to start off your day.

3rd... Clear my mind and practice focusing by meditating. This will also help me to relax.

4th... Do a bit stretching before engage into studying. This will help to relax my tense muscles and increase blood circulation.

5th... Put on mood lifting music. I can't study without music because it'll will make my mind wander. Melodic trance and electronic musics boost my mood.

6th... Take action and discipline!! Work my plan and use it to guide and keep me moving forward.

7th... Take short breaks. So it's break time, do stretching and re-fuel myself with some water or coffee.

8th... Reward myself after the hard work. Celebrate my accomplishments and knowing that I've done my best.
